They're mostly to stop the wind from blowing through tubing and making 
whistling sounds.

At least, they seem to work for that!

I think tubing caps are unnecessary and they could trap water.  I never use 
them.

Mine are all but gone due to age and UV. Where can I get replacements ir
substitutes?

Are they necessary?

How about corks?
