I have also read that you should use a mechanical connection for the tower
ground and I'm sure that it's good advice, however I have never seen the
solder melt on any of my outdoor hardline connections or control wires due
to a lightning strike. Of course I have seen a lot of other damage, but no
melted solder.

I thought he might be thinking about using copper pipe instead of straps to
connect the tower to the ground system. From what I've read on the subject,
those joints should not be soldered. An in-shack buss bar is a different
matter.
