I did roughly this for several years with a Butternut HF9V. In addition
to a direct connection to the roof sheet where the antenna sat, I used a
couple of 125-foot wires to couple to as many sheets of the roof as I
could (figuring that their mutual electrical connectivity was
questionable). It worked decently as a second-radio antenna for SO2R,
but as soon as I could I replaced it with a switching system so I could
use my primary antennas on both radios.
