Well my UST HDX589MDPL has a separate uphaul and downhaul cable. These
do not connect to each other and are fixed to the drum. The drum spools
on one cable and spools off the other at the same time depending on
whether it's raising or lowering.
I am at work and won't be home until Wednesday morning so I can't check
but I am pretty sure this is the case.

I think you guys are thinking of two different motor drives. The US
Tower ( and some Tristao and Tri-EX) MDP-750 is a continous cable for
pull up and pull down and wraps around a multi grooved pulley system.
The MDPL-1000 is a drum with two seperate calble, one for pull up and
the other for pull dowm.
I have seen the MDP-750 cable slip if it too loose or too slippery.
