A similar practice if your conduit can be manouvered around a bit, ie
poly pipe, is to weld a section of slightly larger steel pipe to the
rear of the ripper tyne as a guide tube. As the ripper moves through
the soil, feed the poly pipe down the guide pipe and this will bury
the poly pipe without pulling on the pipe.
Using glued sections of conduit with this method almost guarantees
there will be no separation at any of the joints.
Choosing the appropriate sized ripper and guide tube and if your
tractor will pull the ripper tyne, you can bury any sized poly pipe.
I have seen 100 mm (4 inch) poly gas main (12 mm / 1/2 inch wall
thickness) poly pipe buried this way. The poly pipe was laid on the
ground along the route, with all joints previously welded and then
fed over the top of the dozer pulling the ripper and buried to a
depth of 800 mm ( 32 inches). This gas main went in 5 km (approx 3
mile) stages between pump stations.
This would also be ideal burying lighter guage cables for radial mats
as well. Be easy for a small garden tractor to lay the cables.
