I had a X7 I assembled in 2004. There was a missing part and I sent email to
them and they sent the part. I looked in my email, because I remember noticing
something like you say. The actual ES part is 1/2" x 32". The parts list shows
1/2" x 36"
So the part you have is right. The manual is wrong. Let's see, I got a response
from Cushcraft too (there were 3 issues I mentioned...I just snip the relevant
reply)

1) The element with the traps, has 1/2" tips. All other element tips are

I mention that so you don't think I'm confused about the parts, in this
comment.
The parts list shows ES as 1/2" x 36". The actual ES part shipped, is 1/2"
x 32".
This is actually fine, since it goes into the trap, with only 29"
extending, so 3" in the joint,
which is about right. This was a little confusing, since the parts list
does say 1/2" x 36".
I'm imagining the element was shortened, but the manual wasn't updated."
Cushcraft replied:
"on the other two issues #1----indeed the tube is correct but as you guessed
not re-documented in manual ( 36 inches would stick out too far ,--or some ham
would smash the inner coil trying to ram it to meet dimension)"
