Thanks everyone for all of the suggestions.

I was able to wind the coil by hand by placing the element tip in the bench
vise.  I just kept working the wire on the 3/4" fiberglass tube until it looked
nice and tight along the entire length.  It should be as good as new once I
cover it with the glue filled heat shrink tubing.
