In most of the barns in our area that approach would have required
climbing out over about 30 feet of nothing, with the promise of lots of
pain at the bottom. They'd typically build their nests out on beams well
away from the center ladder.
To start: I was a lot younger and hopefully now a bit smarter.
We'd get 3 or 4 of us teenagers. One each would quietly climb up to the
peak at each end of the barn. 40' high to the peak and they varied from
100 to 200 feet long.
Then some one would grab the ropes to the overhead track used to put hay
and straw overhead and yank on it to make a lot of noise. Often we'd get
some one with a a flashlight to climb up near us at the ends. The birds
would think the light was coming in through a window. Of course it
did have its hazards in addition to falling. One of the neighbor kids
opened his mouth to holler "I got one", but it sorta choked off at the
end. Never open your mouth once the birds were flying. He had caught
a sparrow and choked on it. At least he didn't swallow it. <:-)) It's a
wonder some of us didn't fall as we were all laughing so hard. I stepped
off the straw backwards one afternoon and fell close to 30 feet. I
landed on my back. While on the way down my left arm hit one of the
beams hard enough to break my wrist. I landed on the board floor. They
tell me I bounced about 3 feet back up, but all I remember is trying to
breathe and nothing would work.
