Dan,

1 1/2" nominal pipe will have an outside diameter of 1.9 inches. This is true 
for either schedule 40 or 80.

I seem to have lost my mast pipe , and only have access to Homedepot , Lowes 
and such , I am only going about 1 ft above the top of the tower so I figure 
heavy water pipe should work. Does anyone know what size is close to what fits 
in a Tailtwister ?
