Another solution is a double throw relay operating NC to ground with NO power but open with power from the radio acc power jack. When closed the static build up is drained. OR use AS-302U or AS302N I.C.E type protectors-- see http://www.arraysolutions.com/Products/surge_arrestorAS-3xx.htm

While all the gap type suppressors will protect the amp just fine, the
input of the rcvr is going to have over 1000V across it before the gap
fires. while a 1/4 wave coaxial stub is a bit long to be the only
protective device at 144 MHz, the stub will protect the amp and divert a
lot of the energy away from the rcvr. Having the antenna relay be in the TX
position when power is off will also help protect the rcvr. I sent this to
