Yea, that is what is happening. Seconds after my last post I received an
undecipherable reply DIRECTLY from zhangliu.

They are not at all uncommon. Nearly every list I'm on receives a few, although it's much better now days. People (including hams) would put up the "out of office" note without thinking about reflectors separately from business mail. As was mentioned, it got to be a real PITA on some groups.

I didn't realize any one person had been given credit as it's so widely use by people not thinking.<:-))
I never heard about it and IT was my profession until I retired in 97.

On the CrTech Broadcast List it is lovingly called Faron's Oscillator.
Many years ago, Faron set his vacation reminder to reply to all received
emails and when the list repeats started coming in you can imagine what
happened. I don't recall Faron's last name and he isn't active on the
CrTech list but his name lives on in legend.

On a list where there was normally 30 or 40 posts per day, with Faron's
Oscillator running there were thousands of posts when a post hit his InBox
and was automatically replied to and then the automatic reply was reflected
and then replied to and ....

Modern reflector software generally filters this kind of thing but it came
about from early classic fails.

It could be worse-- On another list, someone set "Return receipt

Someone translated it earlier, sounds like an out-of-office auto reply.
  My
suggestion would be to switch him to digest mode and send him an email
telling him why so when he gets home he knows not to do that again.

is zhangliu529@sina.com a legit member of Tower Talk? If not how

blocking them?

This email address is a legitimate subscriber to TT, as opposed to
spammers that spoof member email addresses. Other than the recent
post that was just ??????????, what other transgressions has this
member committed? I don't recall anything else and I do read EVERY post.
