The other thing is that utility poles don't usually have much side load on 
them. Just the vertical load ftom ghe wires and equipment, because the lateral 
loads are balanced.  The wires go to the next pole in both directions along the 
line.  When they  aren't in straight line, the pole is guyed.

I’m pretty sure the 20-foot utility poles in many neighborhoods are not 80 feet 
long. (Three feet down for every one foot up would be 60 feet buried and 20
