How are you "switching the stub in or out?" As others have noted, if you insert a switch, the switch, as well as any coax between the tee in the line and the switch makes the stub longer, which tunes it to a lower frequency.

  so I took Jim’s(K9YC) suggestion and moved the stub farther away from the 
transceiver.

You've completely missed the point of my article. You've got to MEASURE these impedances and find the voltage peak on the line. You've also got to study the output circuit for your amp (or use the table in the link) to figure out the correct length of cable between stub and amp.
