Synthetic lubes are becoming the norm now. Hub City has synthetic lubes as standard now in their worm gearboxes. They do recommend flushing the old non synthetic lube from our worm gear boxes before switching to synthetic. I have had no problems at all with leakage from my worm gear box since switching to synthetic. It is more expensive but I don't plan on changing it very often :-)

Some of the articles that I read said sludge can prevent aged gaskets from

allegedly, with newer formulations, that is no longer a problem

This may not be relevant but I switched from dino oil to synthetic in my Jeep motor. It was told it was not necessary to flush. The new synthetic oil seeped out of all the gasket in the motor. Just FYI 73

I did some Goggling on the subject of flushing before switching to synthetic
oil and, at least in the case of automotive engine oil, all of the references I
found said that it wasn't necessary. They say that synthetic oils are already
a mix of mineral and synthetic. Synthetics do tend to loosen debris so perhaps
it might be wise to run awhile with the first batch of synthetic then drain and
refill if your system has been in service long enough to be dirty.
I found this on Mobil's website;

While Mobil SHC 600 Series are generally compatible with mineral oil based
products, a mixture may detract from their performance. Consequently it is
recommended that before changing a system to one of Mobil SHC 600 Series
products, it should be thoroughly cleaned out and flushed to achieve the
maximum performance benefits.-Mike-

John,

I don't know the capacity of your TX455 gearbox but it would not be over
one quart.
My HDX589 gearbox takes exactly one quart.
As you probably already know it is important to flush the old gear lube
out with
the synthetic lube you are going to use. The original lube and the
synthetic are
not compatible. I would order two quarts. That should work fine for
flush and fill.
Here's a supplier that I have used.

I was reading with interest the explanations of the lube needed for US
Towers. My TX455 has been up for five years now and, while I have lubed the
grease fittings regularly, I've never changed the oil. I want to do this now
using SHC630 as K6UJ noted. However, before I order this, how much would you
recommend I order? Would 2 quarts be enough to both flush the gear assemble
and refill it? I'd hate to have too little on hand after draining.
Thanks for your help.
