you can get around this dilemma by using lumped element
transmission line networks.  Then you make the physical
length of the transmission lines equal to the physical
distance to be be covered and use the lumped element
networks to make them look like an electrical
quarter wave.  If you want to add additional length for
common mode chokes, you simply compensate for it by changing
your lumped element negative delay networks.

This will result in a more broadband system than you get
using 3/4 wave lines.
