pattern are what make an antenna a good performer. Far too many hams
think that if the SWR is low, it's a good antenna. :) Sure we want SWR
to be low so we can put power into it.
Depending on the tool, the "gain" may be computed as "relative to a 50
ohm isotrope" so that would take care of the mismatch, if you optimized
for gain.
