I'll make a pitch here for a useful book by Ronald Standler
"Protection of Electronic Circuits from Overvoltages"
Rather than blindly copy another design (which may have had other design
constraints, or used parts available at the time) you can analyze your
particular situation and potentially design a better protection circuit.
One thing the book isn't so hot on is protecting RF circuits, where
there are a lot of new components available - I just bought some
Skyworks PIN diodes intended for protecting RF, so they have very low C,
and very low IMD, as well.
