George,
That is good general advice. Yes, there is always something to learn. I
would certainly like to learn more.
I don't have any background in electronics, etc. but I have been an amateur
radio operator for 57 years. I would probably be embarrassed if it were
known how many hours I have spent reading antenna books, using various
antenna modelling programs, physically working on antennas, etc. over five
decades. Truthfully, I would be absolutely shocked if anyone reading this
has spent half the time I have even though many may know a lot more than I
know. Many who know me would probably say it has been way too much of my
life.
To give you an idea of how long I have been doing this, I purchased a 14AVQ
vertical before making a quick and short duration trip to Cayman Brac in
2016 to work the WPX CW Contest at a time when our house was being built.
That is the only commercial antenna I have purchased and used since 1981.
Every antenna that was ever used at my multi-multi station in Arkansas was
homebrew and designed by me with a lot of help from antenna modelling
programs and whatever knowledge I had acquired from reading and trying to
understand everything that ever came my way regarding antennas. I guess I
was "wishing" to play with antennas when I was 15 years old and made a 4
element 40m Yagi out of #14 wire, having no idea what I was doing, by just
doubling the dimensions from a copy of a 204-BA manual. I never stopped
and 56 years later I am still playing with antennas.
Regarding the ARRL, I have been a proud lifetime member since about 1977,
having made 8 quarterly payments of $22.50 over a two year period. That
was a difficult financial decision at the time. ARRL was getting ready to
increase the dues from $9.00/yr to $12.00.
