Subject: RE: [TRLog] What's In The Zone
Not to dis ya, but ain't that what a map is for?
Yep, but I don't have one hanging on the wall and don't feel
like finding one. Ain't that what a computer is for--to
allow you to have that information at your fingertips. I've
used TR for a good six or so years and love it, but CT and
NA do provide that data and I don't see why TR can't either.
Better to learn that info so you don't have to spend
keystrokes to find it
out.
Maybe when I was younger I could keep such arcane data in my
head, even at 2AM Sunday morning. Now I can't remember
where I placed the cup of coffee I was just drinking.
Again, why should I need to memorize something the program
should provide?
Many contesters have spent a lot of time staring at the zone
map, analyzing
old logs, etc. to learn what is where and once you know, it
goes both ways:
you know what zone to expect from the guy who calls, you
know what countries
to expect when you hear the report out from under the
pileup.
And you also learn that the W4's, W7's, W8's, UA9's and the
UA0's aren't
always in the zone suggested by the computer.
Add Canadians (Zone 2). And W7's who don't sign /1 although
I believe the rules require it. But that's besides the
point. I think you're missing the point, Dave, which is the
program should provide as much information as it can so you
can do your job. Your job is to be The Operator not The
Keeper Of Arcane Knowledge. The program gives you the zone
(although it IS your job to verify it). I just want a quick
way of knowing what countries (preferably in two colors for
those worked and those not) are in any particular zone so if
I hear it as the exchange, I can quickly tell if I should
stick around or not. After many years of contesting where
the contesting was the thing (i.e. a better score than last
year), I am back to hunting for new countries and new
band-countries as the reason to operate.
