In the Feb 2001 Sprints I started having lockup problems much like Phil has
described. The only way out was to kill power on the computer and then
start over. The first time it happened I reinstalled an earlier version
which at the time seemed to cure things. But the following weekend the same
thing happened....and continued to happen from time to time throughout.
Tried different versions.....nothing helped. There was no
pattern......sometimes it would lock up shortly after starting and sometimes
it would go for hours.
My first thought was RF getting into something and for a while I thought I
had stumbled on something with placement of the keyboard. But this theory
was soon dashed.....and I have had absolutely no RF issues with other
programs on this computer.
This past Feb prior to the sprints I was messing around trying different
things, doing "test" contests trying to make it lock up.....which it would
eventually. However on one of those lockups something appeared on the
screen about a "stack overflow" something or other (I'm a computer lid...)
This was the first time I had ever seen this. I remembered something about
CONFIG.SYS (?) and a line that says STACKS = xxxxx. I increased this (and
I'm sorry, I don't remember what the original value was or what I increased
it to....that computer is 200 miles away....) and I had zero problems for
the duration of both the phone and cw sprints. I'm not 100% certain this
cured things due to the random nature of the lockups but no problems since
in Sprints, PACC, MnQSO, and some others leads me to think I'm on to
something. I may try some CQ-M next weekend to see what happens.
This is a long winded reply for a simple suggestion but I thought some
history might be of benefit.
