I had the same problem as Scott and I was using port 23 with the nodes I was
trying to connect into.  The '8000' probably came from my writeup because I
used the w1srd.net example and Steve uses port 8000.  Sorry for the
confusion, because most nodes use port 23.

This doesn't address the problem, at least for me.
