As a rover in the January contest for more than 20 years, I believe that the
current hours are quite reasonable. It allows for either setting up Sat AM, or
driving to the far spot on the itinerary. In either case, it is a consistent
time with the other VHF contests. When I was working a job on Saturdays when I
was younger, although I'd miss a few hours at the start, I could generally get
on after 5PM and still enjoy a lot of contacts. I don't see the rules and
dates/times as broken now. As for the issue of what weekend and the challenge
of finding a better spot, It has been worked over enough. At least the Super
Bowl has been moved to a weekend that doesn't conflict. Rick K1DS/R
