My motherboard and HD recently died untimely deaths and took a rich
history software with it.

Two suggestions.. first, backup your data. Secondly, unless you have
reason to belive the HD died from a head crash, the problem most
likely is in the controller circuit board. Many computer dealers
maintain old crashed HDs, and it's a simple matter to replace the
printed circuit board with a known good one, get the data, and then
put the old board back on the HD.

OR, if the HD is not too old, and still available, order an exact
duplicate. Transfer the board from the new one to the old one, get the
data and then switch the boards again.

Or, the manufacturer of your HD may be able to give you circuit boards
which will work with any number of drives.

Been there, done that, now use a cdrom to burn critical files..
