A couple of weeks ago, after adding the WriteLog Colors section to the web
site, I took a hard look at ease of use on the site. This perspective was
for both new users of WriteLog and experienced users as well. What I found
was a site, like many on the Internet, that had grown over time and had
become unwieldy. The last three days I have been significantly changing how
the site is structured and modifying the content on the site. The results
are now up at http://www.k9jy.com. Hopefully, this will improve the
usability (read User Manual) of the site for all.
The site is now divided on the left navigation bar into four areas:
1. Working WriteLog
This section covers Get Started, Universal Setup, Operating a Contest,
Monitoring Progress, and Post-Contest sections all directly accessible from
the left navigation bar.
2. Specialty Contesting
This section covers SO2R and Multi-Op contesting directly accessible from
the left navigation bar.
3. Reference
This section covers areas to explore during non-contest times and provides
in-depth information on subjects: Master Files (.dta, CTY), MS Windows,
Sound Cards, WriteLog Colors, WriteLog.ini, and WriteLog Windows (help files
for all WriteLog windows) all directly accessible from the left navigation
bar.
4. WriteLog Links
This section includes WriteLog Contests, the rules for all contests WriteLog
supports, and WriteLog Links, other web sites that support the WriteLog
program.
A complete table of contents is listed below the signature for reference. I
hope you find the site more useful with the changes.

- Get Started
Includes setting up directories for contests, getting initial Master.dta and
CTY files, opening the program, setting Latitude and Longitude, and saving a
baseline configuration.
- Universal Setup
Includes everything single operators and multi-operators need to do to set
up an individual contest for any mode. The top section is a checklist and
the bottom section is step-by-step with screen shots.
- Operating a Contest
A much more streamlined and revamped section.
Contest Tools covers how to use WriteLog windows during the contest. Contest
Tools covers the Entry Window, Super Check Partial, Check Call, Packet, Band
Map, and S&P Memory Window.
Digital Operations is a Rttyrite review and shows how to use mouse clicks
and function key operations for digital modes above and beyond the windows
covered in Contest Tools.
Edit covers how to edit information during a contest: QSO Entry window, Log
Window, Notes
Monitor Progress covers how to measure progress during a contest and covers
the Band Summary, Rate, Graph, and Multiplier Windows.
Post-Contest covers how to review your log, submitting your log (I have an
additional section on how to do non-Cabrillo log submissions), exporting
your log for use in other programs, reports from the contest, using graphs
after the contest, and how to QSL after the contest.
2. Specialty Contesting
-2 Radio contesting provides a completely revamped section on operating SO2R
based upon WC1M's excellent note (thanks...) to the reflector with
supporting screen shots, plus equipment and software setup mostly based upon
the WriteLog Help files.
- Multi-Op that includes a new section on 'Multi-Management,' a look at how
standard WriteLog tools can be used by a station manager to view the entire
contest. In addition, unique multi-op features found in WriteLog, networking
WriteLog, and troubleshooting Windows problems in a multi-environment are
covered.
3. Reference
This section provides a place to learn more about WriteLog.
Master Files provides links and instructions for downloading and installing
Master.dta, Country (CTY) files, and how to maintain Mult files.
MS Windows provides how to better optimize Windows for use with WriteLog and
works through specific Windows operating systems and what WriteLog supports.
Sound Cards shows how to set up sound cards for use with WriteLog
WriteLog Colors shows how to change screen colors in the WriteLog.ini file
and has a color chart with the associated hex codes needed by WriteLog for
the file.
WriteLog.ini covers many of the commonly used WriteLog.ini file commands
needed by users.
And WriteLog Windows covers virtually all of the windows used by WriteLog
with all of the Help Files associated with them.
4. Links
- WriteLog Contests is a listing, chronologically by month, of all the
contests supported by WriteLog with direct links to the Contest Sponsor
Rules web sites. A singular place to find the rules, log submission
requirements, and email addresses for log submission.
- WriteLog Links provides a wealth of other WriteLog sites that support
WriteLog directly or indirectly.
Finally, Search the Site, accessible at any time, allows the user to put in
a word and the site will find all matches to the word and provide links to
the area.
