Ok I'm a RTTY novice and I contest very very casually but shouldn't RTTY contesters know they shouldn't include dashes or other puncuation in the reports?

There are cases where "-" are useful. For example, 599-05 is better than 599 05 because it avoids two shifts. Some software (maybe WF1B) likes to see the - so it can separate information in the exchange. However, 5NN in RTTY is just plain WRONG.
