Bill, after hours and hours of trying, I fixed the problem of rig control with
the ICOM 756PRO (& PROII, which is what I have). Your suggestions did not
work, but I finally went and looked at the help menu for Rig Control and lo and
behold WL hardwires the radio address for the ICOM 756pro family to 5C hex (the
published default for the ICOM 756PR0 is 64h). No matter what you put in the
.ini file the hard wired setting takes precedence (even though WL help file
says that the .ini entry will take precedence)! This is true for any radio.

So, solving that problem coupled with my success in getting rotator control
working has made my day!

Rig Interfacing
The connection between the computer and the rig is straight through: 1 to 1, 2
to 2, etc., and all 25 pins may be connected. For all radios at least pins 2,
3, and 7 are necessary. If you have a 9 pin connector on your serial port
instead of 25, here is the correspondence:

WriteLog asserts RTS (pin 4) and DTR (pin 20) on the rig port unless you have
also configured the Port Setup to send CW and do rig control on the same port,
in which case the DTR/RTS lines are used to send CW.
If you want WriteLog to run CW on the rig port's DTR and/or RTS lines, more
wires are required as described in Outboard Keyer. WriteLog supports either "PC
generates" CW or the "W5XD Keyer" settings on the same COM port as a rig is
connected. Some rigs require the RS-232 modem control lines (RTS/DTR) to be
active. Kenwood rigs are an example. It is still possible to send CW and
control such a rig on a single COM port, but you must build a cable with
jumpers to satisfy the rig's modem control requirements.
The rigs that may be controlled from the RS-232 port are determined by the
WLOGRIGS.DLL file. You use the Setup Ports menu entry to select your rig type.

You may have heard from others but just in case....
I had this same problem recently.
When using a USB to serial converter, I was told to enter the string
COM3:=1200,n,8,1,
into the [PORTS] section of the .INI file. (the trailing comma and no
spaces is correct)
This did NOT work for me... but putting this string into the [RIGS] section
DID work.
You would need to change the com port number and the baud rate to match your
radio. My radio is an Icom IC-765.

I use DXLab for my primary logging, spotting, etc software. Rig control of
the 756PRO works great using COM4 and a Radio Shack serial to USB adapter
for the port on the computer.
When I run WriteLog, however, rig control using the same port does not work.
A clue, perhaps - it doesn't say "No Radio" in the lower left of the QSO
entry window, but rather it says "kHzFSK." I.e., it is sort of working, but
it's not.
I have confirmed that Writelog.ini has the correct radio, COM port and radio
address, 64h for the 756PRO. The baud rate is set for 9600 in WL, in the
756Pro and on the computer for that port.
Can anyone tell me how to solve this problem?

I've been looking at various functions available under "Tools
Keyboard-shortcuts." Look at the drop down menu at the bottom next to
"Command to Run." It is a treasure trove of potential keystroke and time
savers. Read through them carefully as it is not immediately apparent (at
least it wasn't to me) what some mean on a cursory glance.
One PITA (pain in the ass) with WL is there is only one mult window and to
change continents or zones in it you need to mouse over to the drop down
menu, click on it, select what you want, and then click back in the QSO
entry window to enter a QSO. Or, you can set up a key (I used F12) for
ContestShowMultipliersNext. Hit F12 and you see the next continent without
having the cursor leave the QSO entry window. WOW!!!
I also set up the "[" key to be the same as the INSERT key so I don't have
to lift my hand off the keyboard to send the other guys call and my
exchange.
