Help, many frustrating hours trying to get WL to network.

Setup, Dell Laptop windows XP, emachines desktop windows XP, wireless
Netgear router, WL version 10.0

I use tcp/ip and determine the IP address through IP config and assign
the appropriate address to each computer as it's name as well as the
connect to computer. The firewall is turned off on each of the
computers. I have Norton antivirus running.

I have net dd dde running and it's associated software.

I follow the setup guides to establish a master copy on the destop,
save, register to accept network, and then save as to create a working
copy of the master. I then fire up the laptop and start WL and browse
to the desktop to pick up the master copy, and save as the working
copy, then register to accept, the link.

When I try to link to the network with either computer the cursor
freezes, and then the network status window opens and says link lost to
(IP adress). It does not say link never established is does day was
lost (when I felt a connection was never made). I have tried a number
of different combinations to register and link to network and nothing
seems to get the computers networked to share a common log.

I feel something is blocking the connection and can not determine
what. What should be off, and what should be on?

Do I need to upgrade to to a higher version of WL?

Would this work if I used ethernet cross over cables? Then would the
wireless network have to be turned off?
