Dummies" book and I would make it a mandatory part of our Field Day and
Guest Operator tool set.

I agree that networks can get in the way of operating field day. Each
band/mode keeps a separate log and dupe list. Consolidating the various
logs into one log as you go rather than after Field day is a plus but you
still have to record the bonus points.
Get each PC working as it should and maybe test out networking. I really
think peer to peer is not as good as client server with file share. But
networking is not a real necessity as it is with Multi operating in the
major contests.
Time to pitch "Writelog for Dummies" again. The program is so feature
rich and the documentation so fragmented that unless you are really
serious about the technical side
I say keep it very simple. I find that a trait of any feature rich
software is that a change
cannot really be fully tested and may blow something that has worked in
the past.
Writelog for Dummies would be in three parts:
1. Basic Writelog. Writelog is for logging and can be used
without any network or rig connection! I recommend this for the average
Field day operation!
2. Rig Connection. Explain basic rig connections and maybe have
charts that can be updated for new rigs as they are added and what rigs
are related (van use the same settings and ini. Advanced rig connection
would explain using packet, getting to a second VFO or transceiver, using
PF keys, setting up DVK and .wav files (so you are not confused in the
middle of a hot run), and how to interface with outside devices.
3. Networking. Explain networking for those who are not PC or It
professionals first so many of us can skip over this. Then explain how
writelog uses networking and suggestions for networking 2 to N
workstations (PC's for the non IT types). Maybe some trouble tips so
some of the problems encountered on Field day could be scoped out in
advance.
I can't read for too long due to a stroke in late 1998 so reading and
searching multiple web pages and the archives can be too much for me.
Others have told me they get too confused. Remember feature rich
software changes can cause tried and true to foul up completely.
Writelog is the single best logging software out there but I am sure
maintaining it must be like digging in sand. Usually a knowledgeable
outside (also called a technical writer)
writes something like I am talking about. Maybe K9AY or K9JY could do
it. I think most of us would pay for a copy even if its just a download.
I downloaded the manual for Ver 10.20B but soon added it to the web
pages and the archives as unwieldy.
Just my 2 cents worth.
