Try Audacity.  Free download at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/.  Very easy 
to use.  I recorded lots of files for the SS contest and found the 
recordings sounded more natural if I recorded a long string and then parsed 
out the letters or words into separate files.  For instance, recording all 
the number as 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and then parsing them sounded much more 
natural than just recording "zero", "one", "two", etc.  Same with the 
letters and phonetic pronunciations.
