There are two mechanisms at work here:

1) When Windows boots or installs hardware it probes serial port
addresses to determine what ports are installed and what COM #s
are free. This manifests at typically three "beeps" on the DTR
and/or RTS lines.

This is an operating system issue and the only way to avoid it
is to leave the rig off until Windows has loaded all its ports.

2) When Writelog opens a Radio port it sets RTS and DTR high
*by default* - unless one is using a radio for which the driver
specifies handshake, is using CW and "all mode PTT" on the radio
control port, or the user has edited WriteLog.ini to leave the
RTS/DTR lines alone (or set them low).

For those for whom the rig goes into transmit when WriteLog starts -
those with a microHAM interface with the PTT port set to RTS of the
CAT port for other software, K3 users with CONFIG:PTT-KEY set to
RTS-DTR but who wish to use WinKey with WriteLog, users of some
other serial/USB interfaces that provide PTT on RTS and wish to
use WinKey or CW/PTT on a separate port for CW, etc. - the way to
prevent WriteLog from keying the rig at start-up is to inset the
necessary COM#_RTS_INIT directives in the [RIGS] section of the
writelog.ini file. The information is provided in the [RIGS] part
of the WriteLog Help file.

In general, unless one is using flow control (Kenwood, Ten-Tec, and
newer Yaesu rigs), one wants to add COM#_RTS_INIT=0 for all radio
ports to the [RIGS] section of writelog.ini.

It's typical for this to happen when using a COM port for PTT but I
am unsure why it would happen with USB and a MK - maybe the same
reason. During the boot process, RTS toggles states and this causes
the radio to key. I normally turn my radio off when when booting the
computer.

Hi and thanks...

Just upgraded to Ver 11.18 and it each time it boots the FT-2000 is
keyed.

I've used WL and an older Microkeyer for years and had no problem
like this before.

I've spent a couple of days checking the web and double checking
the MK and WL setup rules, connections to the soundcard, etc.

Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction for a
fix.

Darrel - K1KU
