Most rigs that support autobaud will do so *one time* when first
powered up. With users starting and stopping software multiple
times a day, autobaud results in "no response" most of the time.
In addition, setting both software and rig to "autobaud" is a recipe
for a standoff as each tries to catch up to the other.

It is far more reliable to set Icom rigs to 9600 or 19200 bps, Kenwood,
Yaesu and Elecraft to 38,400 bps and match those speeds with the
software than play "autobaud roulette." Even more so with something
like microHAM DK II, MK II, or MK2R+ which also require matching the
rig's data rate and protocol.

Joe,

I've been using AUTOBAUD for many years spanning several rigs and computers
(up to Win7) without a problem.
I know how the hardware is supposed to work since I've designed 232
hardware, but I don't do software so I'm a bit ignorant about how software
does that task. I can imagine how it should be done, and it should be
bullet proof so long as there aren't any glitches (like from RF).

Just curious about your hard opinion.

Have you set up the CAT communications in microHAM Router
*BEFORE* starting WriteLog and then configured WriteLog to
communicate with MK II/the rig *at the same data rate* that
you configured in the rig and microHAM Router?

*DO NOT, EVER* use "autobaud" in any software or rig.
