I would check that the setting of VR1001 (RF Drive 1.8 to 3.0Mhz. This
adjustment is located on the RF Board upper left corner directly next to the
tab that secures the board in the FT-990. The problem you describe makes me
nearly 100 percent certain this is your problem. I have performed a number
of repairs on my 10 year old FT-990 and feel it is a great radio that can be
repaired by most hams with basic skills. Good luck and please let me know
if I was spot on in my theory.
