I believe that they were mounted inside the
mic head at the base where the mic cord enters
the mic head.

My FT-897D came with the MH-31 mic.

Do you recall if you mic has a DTMF pad?  If so
it is probably the MH-59, if not then the problem
is likely not in the mic.
