I woosed out. With 17 minutes of operating time left at about 0230 Sunday, I
still needed MAR. I had heard VE9HX S&Ping Sunday on 10 meters but I couldn't
get him to answer my CQs. I called CQ MAR for an hour, but to no avail. I knew
from listening to other high power stations on the 2nd radio that I didn't have
a top ten effort going. So during my last break, while watching the World
Series, I decided to woose out and try for the sweep with some packet
assistance. I conected to DX-Telnet, saw a recent spot for VE9DX, found him and
worked him. I know, I know, real contesters don't use packet. Like I said I
woosed out (Flame suit on - hi hi.)
A few other items. I was warming up a frequency on 10 meters about 5 minutes
before the start. I worked about 3 or 4 guys and then WP2Z responds to my CQ. I
work him and then he sends, "Ken" and starts CQing. I send "MY FREQ." He
ignores me and, of course, gets a pile-up going with two minutes to the start
and I'm SOL. Took a few minutes to find another frequency and I got off to a
slow first few minutes. Then things got hot and I wound up with a personal best
104 hour.
The 03Z hour on 20 meters produced a great 89 QSOs. Unfortunately, by the time
20 meters died out, 40 meters was wall to wall CQers and I couldn't find a spot
and I dropped to a 55 hour.
I had the 6th game of the World Series on in the background so I knew there was
going to be a 7th game. I saved offtime, but from my view that last 17 minutes
on the air was productive and it didn't seem from here activity had died off.
Kudo's to VE3FU. While working a QSO on the 2nd radio, VE3FU called me. I got
hung up with a fill on the 2nd radio and VE3FU took the frequency and started
calling CQ, as was perfectly proper. After he worked a guy, I called him. He
worked me and then gave me back the frequency. VE3FU, thank you.
With regard to the thread on on changing SS, all I can say is every contest has
its own flavor. You don't say you "worked" a contest for nothing. SS Sunday
afternoon IS work. Its the work and perseverance that separates the men from
the boys. Leave SS alone.
