Wow. That was quite a bit of fun. I haven't done a single-op
contest seriously in quite a while. In a way, I guess I could
have done this one more seriously, as I got up fairly late
(relatively speaking, 13z) both days. I just didn't feel that loud
that early in the morning, running low power, so I didn't feel
like getting up too early, especially the second morning.
I normally don't enter any contest without the amplifier being on,
except for the NAQPs. I can definitely tell in the rate
department. I only had one hour over 100 (107...big whoop)
and of course it was SSB. Actually, I was planning on entering
in the QRP catagory, and I started out as such. But when I had
4 QSOs in TEN minutes, I said this QRP stuff isn't for me, a
rate monger. So up went the power and up went the rate...instantly.
I felt fairly good after the first night, having 198 Qs by 05z...
until I heard a fellow SMCer had that many in the first hour. Ouch.
I didn't really go into this contest intending to do it seriously,
as my wife usually gets me all guilted up and I end up quiting
on Saturday and just operate the rest of the weekend when I can.
I still was getting TONS of flak from her for being gone (to K4JA)
for Thanksgiving, not to mention Halloween. I was seriously in the
doghouse for Thanksgiving, and she wouldn't let me forget it.
To compound the issue, Thursday was her birthday, and that would
make this her birthday weekend. Queen for a day? Nope, Queen for a week.
I haven't done the ARRL 10M contest seriously since 1991 from the
now defunct KS9K. The last few years have been about 14 hours of
SSB running, that's it.
This weekend was different for some reason. Not only did she let
me operate, but she cooked meals regularly and delivered them.
I was simply amazed. She was in a great mood and that put me into
one as well. It was great. I'll leave out the details as to what
I have to do in exchange. It wasn't free.
Also different, was that I've always entered SSB only, HP, ever
since I first did this contest in 1989. This is the first time
I've ever entered mixed mode. I guess two things factored in.
I thought that, with low power, I'd have a better signal.
I'd also have more to do, as I could work the same people twice.
Secondly, I'm slowly changing my mind about my favorite mode,
and CW may have overtaken my strong SSB preference. I think
mostly because I don't like the massively packed phone bands
and the QRM that one must endure. On CW, you can pretty much
expect a clear frequency with a 400Hz filter. On SSB, even
with 1.8kHz filters, you have people on both sides coming through.
One thing that I contribute to my score is the use of SO2R.
My two antennas are seperated only about 120', and interfere with
each other on the same band, but it certainly gave me something
to do with the slower rates of low power. I was nearly constantly
working the 2nd radio on the opposite mode, and I believe it
really helped my multiplier totals.
