Comments:
Wish I could've participated more in this contest. Unfortunately, the ARRL 10m
test falls on the weekend before final exams. Needless to say, it wasn't in my
best interest to operate a lot.
I miss living at the old house with the pastures. They sold the old place
because of bad neighbors (lots of civil and criminal behavior). Long story made
short, the 2 ele quad is in my parent's garage, the tower is in a pipe rack, and
the KW amplifier is in a spare room in the house.
My Kenwood 850 is the mainstay of a barebones station. Ladder line ran under
pine straw feeds a loop antenna made out of about 60ft of wire (apex 15ft,
maybe) If the loop were higher, it might work better. The wire that I taped to
the potato (thrown into tree) kept getting hung, so I think that's out.
My signal is "so-so" to the West, but REALLY weak to the east because the loop
is on an embankment and the apt building itself is in the way. As a result,
worked lots of *loud* W6's and W7's, but only one W1, no W2's, and seems like
one W3. Wasn't for lack of trying.
Probably will make a makeshift vertical out of some aluminum tubing soon.
So far the apt complex hasn't complained (or noticed). My neighbors and I have
a deal. They don't rat my antenna out, and I don't rat them for smoking weed in
their apts. As long as they stay out of my way, I don't really care!
Heard a number of stations after 0500z. Unfortunately, many didn't hear me.
AA1K was briefly loud, but disappeared. Called K3CR, K7SE, KC7V, W4AN, NA5S,
and KD4D for long periods of time, but no answer.
Good to be back in touch with radio again. I enjoy contesting and CW whether it
be with loops in sweetgum trees or yagi arrays. Nice to get to ragchew with
locals again on 40m. Seems like I'm pretty loud until about 250mi out. It's
easy to obscure the humanity contesting with an F1 button.
See you soon with bigger and better!
