Comments:
This weekend was more like a Hamfest than a contest. We had many
parttime operators coming and going. Only five of the 14 were
fulltime. A few "overnight" specialists.
We seemed to have reach the next level of operating. This contest
produced 25% more QSOs than last year even with the poorer band
conditions. We also surpassed last years multiplier total.
We try to keep the "fun" in our contesting. K1XM stopped by Sunday
and spent 2 hours on 15 meters with Max, N1LYA, showing her how
to run a contest. Calling CQ, S&P, passing QSOs. It slowed the
rate down but in the long run it helps the hobby and probably
our future results. Paul has the patience of a saint. Contrary
to wide belief, he does do phone!
Ralph, K9ZO, flew out here Thursday. I met Ralph about in 1985
when he would come out for training at Data General. He would
spend weekends in my basement, amazed at the low band results
here on the East Coast. Though I have visited Ralph at his QTH
in Illinois several times it was great to get him back out here
to operate. He sure helped!
After he was finished "hanging" with Joe Walsh and Bob Heil,
NN1N stopped over to visit his old friend K9ZO and make a
few QSOs for us. Never hurts the bottom line to have him
stop by.
The core crew of N1XS, NB1U, KB1DFB, K1EBY, AA1CE, and W1TJL
worked hard through tough conditions and have really morphed
into a contesting crew.
We tried K1RX's secret weapon of feeding the gang waffles but
alas we still finished a little behind their great effort.
It is tough to compete in the class that includes about 10
stations that are amazing. There are little victories. An
occasional win in a pile-up, finding a multiplier, spotting it,
and then hearing those 10 stations in the packet pileup you
do not have to deal with. Somehow there is satisfaction in
only being beat by double your score instead of triple. We
must be crazy to think this way!
Thanks to everyone who gave us a contact, especially those
who QSYed for us. We are getting better at doing this.
Our next full effort will be in WPX CW as NZ1U.
