That was FUN!
I started 1.5 hours late, took 2+ hours off at dinner time and quit 30 minutes
before the end. How was I supposed to know that 160M was an NAQP band? No one
was there the one time I listened so I ASSumed it was not included. (Read the
rules??? :-)
Rate averaged 68 with a peak hour of 93 on 40M. Low band QRN made it difficult
to impossible to copy some of the weaker callers. The pattern nulls on my CC
2L40 were VERY noticable. I actually turned the beam several times to pick up
callers off the sides, even close in ones. 80M was MUCH slower, had less
activity, MORE QRN, and I suspect my elevated GP and High EU Dipole were not the
best antenna choices for this affair.
One of these days I will put up some Lower Dipoles or inverted vees for 80 and
40 aimed appropriately for domestic contests. Maybe even add a second radio and
do this thing Full Time...
I'm going to have to relearn what directions are best for back scatter on the
high bands, especially after dark. From Iowa in the 60's it seemed best if both
stations were pointing at the sun during the day. From ALA, there are times
when due EAST seems best, even after dark. I don't understand that one. Manual
antenna switching is clearly 'dated'. At least the FT-990 is No-Tune, my only
venture out of 80's technology (not including the laptop).
