First, thanks to my wife for dealing with the baby most of the weekend so I
could do this contest - and thanks to my daughter for waking me up at 3am on
Sunday morning local time - after I got her back to bed, I figured - why not get
back on 80 & 160 instead of sleeping!!! (As I used to say to my friends during
my wild and youthful days - 'you can sleep when you're dead!')
This score is for all of us out there who have no towers and no beams, (and
almost no hope to win) just some dipoles in the trees, maybe a vertical and a
lot of motivation to do better each year.
My strategy was pretty simple - call CQ on one radio (even if the rate was
absurdly low) and use the second radio to S&P. My best bands in terms of
antennas were 80 (an inverted vee at 60 feet) and 15 (a dipole to EU at 45
feet.) Overall, my CQ's brought in 25% of my Q's; on 15 it was just over
60% of my total.
My most interesting contact was finding a ZL in the clear at 0930 on Sunday on
20 meters - hardly anyone else on the band at all - and nothing else from that
part of the world was heard all weekend on my earphones.
I worked seven stations on all six bands - V31DJ, 8P5A, HI3TEJ, ZF2TJ, VP5Y,
PJ2T and PJ4R. My 160 capabilities have gotten better, though I still don't get
out well enough to get into Europe unfortuately....but my DXCC has now inched up
to 25 on the topband!!
Thanks to everyone for all the contacts!
