Worked hard in this one with more than my usual time at the keys, and enjoyed
every moment. Drizzle Sat. morning and Sun. afternoon kept the powerline noise
to a dull roar, and I spent quite a bit of time with the beam aimed away from
the source, trying to work Asia.
Conditions on 10M were brutal (no sigs). 'Nuff said.
On 15M Saturday I could hear all kinds of EU action, but was able to work only
very few stations -- odd conditions with weak signals but a favorable S/N ratio
for great copy. Felt like an attenuator was in place, but it wasn't. Maybe next
time things will open up here. Some sigs were LOUD (EA4, and curiously, ZS6).
For an hour or two on Sat. afternoon I could work CT, EA and F stations and few
others. Sunday was pretty much domestic contacts on 15.
20M was wide open Saturday and Sunday mornings, but Sat. was by far the best
I've seen it in many months. Had to go to work a couple of times, and forced
myself out of a JA run once and an EU run the next time.
40M was hot for a while Friday and Saturday evenings, but petered out quite
early. At last, the twin delta loops are doing their job for me into the U.S.
and Carribean.
80M was good Friday night, and better Saturday night here. By 10 p.m. local
(0500z) things were quiet, though. Got decent sleep both nights.
Never heard a VK, and only worked ZL2AMI for the Kiwi run. Did find a JA on 80M
early on Saturday morning on the 80M delta loop. He was QSB but readable, which
is a pretty fair indicator of good conditions considering the ambient powerline
noise level at this QTH.
Thrills this time out: a call from ZS6, who was so loud at first I thought it
was a midwest station... Working YB0DO and VR2BG near the end, a reminder to
turn the beam W-NW to CQ once in a while... Finding Algeria (new to me I
think)... and once again working FR1HZ -- that's a long haul from B.C. (or
anywhere, hi). Heard him several times quite loud here.
This time, I worked GU0SUP without any extra overs (unlike last weekend). Phil
was solid; hope I was at his end.
Went into the weekend thinking I'd get about half of last year's totals. Well, I
crept closer and closer and finally beat the Q and point totals. Sections were
up by 4 (69 up to 74) but countries were down by 7 (80 down from 87).
Biggest differences: last year had 35 countries on 15m and only 19 this year.
Did work 7 countries on 40M, up from 0 last year.
