Comments:
I was not sure what I was going to do for this contest. WM5R was
looking for a place to operate and I told him he could come over and
do whatever he wanted to do - single op all band, single band or we
could do a multiop. Ken got to the station about an hour before the
contest and said he wanted to do a single band effort on 15 meters.
I was thinking I would do a single band 40 - as I had some commitments
that would require me to take time away from the radios during the day
on both Saturday and Sunday. As the contest start neared I decided
that I would operate the first hour on 20 meters so I could enjoy the
great rates until 20 meters died. The rates were great at the start
and I did not get around to moving to 40 meters until 0330z after 581
contacts. After spending so much time on 20 meters I changed plans
and decided that I would do an all band effort minus 15 meters. At
some point on Sunday I started calling it 'single op all band with one
band tied behind my back'.
As it turns out I got in much more time operating than I expected
since the activity that was going to take me away from the radios on
Sunday never happened. It looks like I got in almost 34 hours of
operating.
I worked WM5R on 15 meters the first night. In looking back I should
have worked a few more guys on 15 meters during the contest but I did
not bother to go back there until late Sunday afternoon when I loaded
up the 160 inverted L with the tuner in the radio at 100 watts. I
could only work the guys that were loud enough to hear above WM5R's
noise. But it was good for 21 more contacts and even 3 new prefixes
that I had not worked yet. If I had known that I was going to put in
as much time as I did I would have gone to 15 meters several other
times during the contest.
One other side effect of Ken being on 15 meters was that I only used
one radio for the weekend - and had only 20 band changes. There were
several times when I was wishing I had a setup with two SO2R positions
as I have seen at a few stations lately. In my case each of us was
using one half of my SO2R setup.
All in all it was a fun time on the radio - it would have been a
pretty good weekend to do a single op all band or multiop from Texas -
Ken had a fairly good EU run on Sunday that would have really helped
my score with both mults and need QSO points. As can been seen from
the continent breakdown sheet I mostly worked stateside.
While the station was in fairly good shape for this contest - the
20/40 yagis that normally rotate were fixed northwest with a broken
rotator and I never did get my free time and good weather lined up to
get the rotator repaired before the contest. Since the 40 meter yagis
do not have great front to back and I have beverages to listen on it
was not an issue on 40 meters. On 20 meters it did make working stuff
over the pole due north and also the south pacific harder since I did
not have an antenna I could point in those directions.
