I operated portable from Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge south of Starkville.
This turned out to be a great location! I got permission to set up at a fire
tower in an area that overlooks the swamp/lake. The ground slopes down to the
water from west through east. There was zero local noise.
For antennas I used two ~120' dipoles strung between the tower and shot up into
pine trees (trees 75-90 ft tall). I don't know the exact height of the tower,
but I'm guessing it was about 120 ft tall. Dipoles were fed with ladder line to
old Viking matchbox tuners. Radio was a K2 set at 5W output, logging with an old
laptop. Powered by a deep cycle battery.
I also got to observe some wildlife from my operating tent: a couple of times
an armadillo went poking around; late at night a racoon wandered around and
stopped to look at me through the tent screen. Lots of birds including
woodpeckers, many loud owls at night, and bob-whites Sunday morning.
Thanks for all the contacts!
