Comments:
I had not planned a serious all band effort, as I had music jobs that consumed
all of Saturday daytime until 8 PM (03Z Sunday). First hour of the contest
yielded 39 JAs on 15m, so I decided to fool around all-band, instead of my
usual 80m single-band effort. The 20/40/80m runs kept me interested and I
operated until two hours after sunrise Saturday morning, with 529 QSOs in the
log. Hearing K6XX everywhere - that kept me going!
20m was good again Saturday night, JAs in quantity until 10Z. High point of
the contest was an unusual 15m opening Sunday morning from 08-10Z - that's 1 to
3 AM local time! In 1.5 hours I logged 77 Asians, including HS, HL, VR2, E21,
BA... I have seen this opening during solar peaks, but never at the bottom of
the cycle. Maybe our propagation gurus (N6BV, etc.) can explain this. That
opening made up for my missing the usual 15m runs on Saturday afternoon.
Sent lots of CQs on 160m both nights, but only got 4 in the log between 10 and
12Z Sunday. All 10m antennas were stuck East, so I didn't try 10m.
I can't remember when I last did an all-band effort, but I had a good time,
despite no sleep for nearly 48 hours. It's getting hard to do that at age 70.
It was fun to QSO many JA friends who I first worked in this contest 40 years
ago. Oldest age received here was 89 - JA1AA. Hope I can send that some day!
