Comments:
I really have enjoyed the ARRL 160m contest since K9AY encouraged me to
participate many years ago. Very limited time to operate these days, so I
managed to put in some time the second evening. Had to get up early Sunday, so
didn't have the luxury of staying up all night.
Interesting that the band was open and active about 2 hours before sunset
Saturday. Best DX was W7RN at 0020z, which is probably before his sunset. Had a
nice run with the rate meter popping momentarily over 200 just before 0000z.
Did have one odd moment as I was calling CQ on a clear frequency. Had someone
call in as "WINDOW". Guys, there hasn't been a DX window for years, but I
wasn't about to debate this finer point in the middle of a contest. (Reference:
http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/regulations/conop.pdf) So, I moved and got good
rate just a few kHz down.
Had Rick NQ4I call me during this run and I blocked on his call. I heard NQ and
then blanked on the rest. When he re-sent, I figured it out. After many years of
operating at his place, and hearing NQ4I over and over again, I blanked it out
automatically. Weird.
Such fun! I hope to make a showing for the Stew Perry this year.
