So now the CQWW CW 160 is history for us!!!!
I have done a lot of crazy things in the name of â??contestâ?? but this one is
very special for me.
I had the privilege to operate with good friends, fantastic operators and hard
workers and also made new friends from the Marconi Cape Cod Radio Club.
A special thanks goes to Barbara Dougan, Cape Cod National Seashore Education
Specialist and Public Information Officer--this operation would have been
impossible without her help and dedication! She is truly a trooper and I am
extremely thankful that she was on our team, Her son came back from Iraq at the
time we build the antennas but she still found the time to be with us to help in
any way she can.
Special thanks to Velimir, K3JO who is not just only the best electrical
engineer I have met in my life but also a super operator and unstoppable
antenna builder. Without him we would have had no antennas at Cape Cod. A thank
you also goes to Mladen, NU5Y who is a 2 time world champion in High speed Morse
code and a man who can handle the pile-ups like nobody else. Thank you to Miki,
N8BO, an unbelievable operator and friend. Thank you to Aram, KB1RDZ and Vinnie
(no call yet but he is bitten) who put in countless hours in extreme weather
circumstances pulling cables, wires and building towers--they were just
unstoppable.
Thanks to Jeff, K1ZM this man does not need a introduction! He is the King of
160 he knows that band minute by minute, he knows all the calls, names of the
operators, times to call a specific station and frequency to call. If you ask
him what happened on March 16 1966 he will not even think and give you the
story, he has a brain like a elephant.
Jeff is my inspiration also, I was ready to quit when the Atlantic wind made
the top of the vertical like spaghetti but Jeff said Krassy! You never give
up!
Thank you Jeff!
For us the contest started January 13th when we made an arrangement with the
Marconi Cape Cod Radio Club that we would sponsor and set up a station to
celebrate the 107th Anniversary of Marconiâ??s first transatlantic message,
which was sent from his Wellfleet Station 107 years ago. We made a modest setup
with 1 ACOM 8 Element Log-Periodic antenna for the higher bands, 1 Vertical for
40 Meters, 1 full size Vertical for 80 Meters and--the important part--1 full
size Vertical for 160 Meters to test the location for the CQWW CW contest. The
celebrating operation started January 16th using the call KM1CC and we had a
good timebut the main thing is to find out is this locations
the best in MA to do a 160 Meter Contest! So the decision was made. We had to
go back home to Boston, buy 30 sections of Rohn 25 for 5 60 feet towers, 5000
feet of Phillystran, 9000 feet of various coax, 15000 feet of regular wire for
beverages and radials and supporting material. Than the work started, working
day and night to prepare everything at the K1LZ base station. We rented a full
seize RV , used 2 Truck loads of Hardware and we moved â??permanentlyâ?? to
Marconi Beach. We started working in the morning and finished at night day in
and day out.
We built the first full size 134 foot vertical, and at night we tested this
antenna and the results were amazing. In the morning the Atlantic wind came up
and blew the top section of the vertical over, so we had to reinforce the
telescoping pipes at that moment had to make the decision to go with a little
short top-loaded or go with a full size, I read the weather forecast with said
no winds more than 20 to 30 miles / hour and made the decision to go with a
full size verticals no compromise.
I had to travel to California on business, and the boys had to finish the job.
I came back Thursday evening before the contest and they had build 5 full seize
verticals (1 four square on the beach (on the Atlantic side of Cape Cod) and the
fifth vertical 1600 feet away from the four square on a cliff and I saw the
picture it was beautiful but never been used in that way.
We worked until the last minute before the contest start, and as soon we sit to
start the contest and the disaster strikes, there were just several short shots
of the wind up 50 to 60 miles / hour and make the pipe sections of the antennas
like spaghetti. We practically worked for 3 weeks and sit in front of the radios
and had no antennas. The amount of frustration was incredible everybody was
exhausted and mentally destroyed, and again Velimir goes out in the dark to
figure out to connect 1 vertical (disconnect 75 ohm phasing line) connect 50
ohm coax and tune this vertical some how with the SWR 2:1 so we had some
antenna. Later on he figured out how to fix the far vertical what was usable
but damages and at one moment if Jeff would not have been around us I was ready
to quit.
So we worked all night hard frustrated and unhappy. We tried to work everything
we hear, because we hear fantastic on our vertical receiving antennas.
We stopped operating around 10:00AM to take our 4 hour brake we had 1065 QSOs
349 Euro, 33 other DX, total 73 countries and 56 states. I was absolutely
curtain that this was not enough. I thought that KC1XX, W8JI and W2GD had
between 100 and 200 more Qâ??s than us.
We used the 4 hour brake and Velimir and me fixed all the antennas, we tuned
them properly and from that point W2GDâ??s last yearâ??s record was history.
The second night the station performed absolutely unbelievable and we feel that
we run better than anybody else.
We finished the contest as follow:
1822 QSOâ??s 87 Countries, 59 States.
741 Europe; 20 Asia; 14 South America; 9 Africa; 5 Oceania and 1033 North
America.
1,495,624 points
This was funâ?¦.I wish that this location was my â??baseâ?? station I keep
asking myself: WHAT WOULD BE OUR SCORE IF WE HAD THE ANTENNAS AS PLANNED ON THE
FIRST NIGHT!
