Comments:
I'd like to thank John, W6JZH, for his wonderful hospitality and use of his
super FB station, the engineering and design of the station is top notch, and I
felt loud through the whole contest.
Unfortunately, like many others, Murphy was again alive and well during this
contest. It started off with me deciding at sort of the last minute to actually
participate in this year's SS, having just returned from doing CQWW SSB as
YN2AA, I didn't think I had it in me to do another SSB contest, after all, I'm
not really much of a phone op to begin with, and I don't know how we all do it,
as painful as it is with 20 and 40m being virtual slug/QRM-fests. However I
wanted to at least provide some points for the NCCC and since I have decided to
sit-out CQWW CW this year and spend it with family, I figured I'd play a bit in
SS. Rusty, W6OAT, was nice enough to hook me up with W6JZH, and for that I'm
grateful. Rusty, you were right, John is one of the nicest and smartest guys
I've met.
So, about Murphy - due to traveling to YN, and my work schedule lately, I've
been missing some sleep and that seems to be the trigger for me to get the
colds that are going around, and I had just gotten over the one I got in YN!
This weekend was no exception - Friday evening I started feeling the sore
throat coming on, and while I got a good night's sleep Friday, mid-contest I
was feeling the cold taking over with a burning throat and fever. It wasn't bad
enough to take me out of commission, but it let me know that Murphy wasn't going
to stay home this time.
Saturday evening in the Bay Area, we had a storm come through that others have
talked about. By about 0200z the rain static was S9+ on 40m, and 80m noise was
S9+ as well, and I ended up taking an unplanned break. I apologize to those
that called Saturday night that I didn't copy - the rain static on 40 and 80m
was extreme, the whole evening was S9-S9+20 static, coming and going, but
mostly relentless. I went to bed and got up around 6AM to start again.
Sunday was much easier than Saturday, but conditions seemed to be deteriorating
and there were many callers that were just below the noise threshold - to them I
also apologize - sometimes with QSB there would be enough to complete the QSO,
other times it just wasn't meant to be. I also never had enough callers to keep
any kind of rate going, the best 60 minute rate was 115, and I had some 10
minute rates of 150 or so per hour, but those didn't seem to last. The QRM on
20 and 40M was extreme, and slowed things down some, I think.
Anyhow, it was a fun contest, and it was nice to hear the voices of lots of
good friends. Thanks to all for the QSOs!
