I still enjoy doing this contest. I enjoy the fact that this contest is
different than others. I like the challenge of the long exchange and
being able to work stations just once.
I was looking forward to this contest - the bands were so good in the
CQ WW SSB contest and the station seemed to work well that weekend
although I have not seen all the scores I am hoping I will mange to
place well in that event as I am happy with my effort. So I had high
hopes for the SS.
This year I had (what seems to be an ongoing theme of my post contest
reports) a tough time on 40 meters. I am just not loud enough on that
band and with 20 meters closing so early each night it is hard to keep
the rate up. Just another reminder to save up my money and build a
bigger antenna for 40 meters. This year things were made a bit worse
with the bands all being long. It makes it hard to keep a clear
frequency when the close in states are very very weak on both 40 and
20. Last year I had a poor start to the contest but a great sunday
because 20 meters was very short and at times station 200 miles away
were very strong. This year it seemed that stations had to be over
500 miles away to even be out of the noise.
Other than that - things worked well, the station worked well
except for the above noted weakness.
Congratulations to NR5M a fine job and what looks to be another win in STX. It
is pretty amazing to see VY2ZM with the top score - I think this is an
indication of how long 40 meters was each night - and also how
undisturbed the solar conditions were this weekend. It was cool to
keep hearing VY1 and VE8 running stations on 15 meters with big
signals for hours and hours unlike the normal radio black outs they
have to endure.
I wish everyone would post their rate sheets it would be cool to have
that information. Maybe we could just run the rate sheets for every
submitted log - then we could see all the cool info as a sidebar to the
results.
