Comments:
The establishment where I play keyboards and sing offered me the weekend off due
to slow reservations over the Thanksgiving weekend. While I was delighted to
get the time off, I was not prepared for a 48 hour effort, just my normal
part-time appearance. My main antenna had come down during a windstorm earlier
in the month, and I had restrung the antenna, but was still not able to get it
to tune on 160M.
I still only put in a short appearance, as we had visitors on both Saturday and
Sunday, and Karen and I went out for dinner on Saturday night. Nonetheless,
activity was great, and conditions were surprisingly good. I was particularly
impressed with 80M to Europe. I wasn't always able to break through on the
first call, but worked almost everything I could hear, including a couple of
Zone 16 Qs. 15M was the other pleasant surprise. Even though many of the
signals were puny weak, they were mostly workable. Far more JAs than I
remember in the previous few years.
While I missed some of the most productive runs on 20M, I still found the
contest to be exhilarating. I also felt confident that I could have put up a
fairly decent score in a 48 hour effort. Maybe next year I'll ask for the
weekend off and play radios instead of music!
