The high 10m yagi at 200' lost the driven element in November, so I was prepared
to do the contest with yagis at 100' and 50'. Got to Ed's Thursday night,
discussed the contest a bit, and Ed said Oh by the way, the 200' yagi is fixed!
So a super surprise to kick off the contest. Ed took advantage of the great
weather Thursday (nearly calm, 45 degrees) to do the climb and get it fixed.
The weather by Saturday was a blizzard with about 100' visibility and 10
degrees. The K3 did a fabulous job knocking out the incredible snow static.
Operating conditions were rough from SD, with no significant Es until about
2130z Sunday. Highest QSO rate before late Sunday afternoon never rose above
35, with the majority at 20 or less, and a couple with 5 or less. Best two
hours were 2200z and 2300z Sunday, with 70 and 100 respectively.
The contest was a grind almost until the very end, but as I was telling Ed,
this brings its own rewards, as every QSO is an achievement, especially the
mults. Getting to come up and run Ed's great station is also a great reward,
regardless of results.
The station at W0SD was an Elecraft K3, homebrew 8877 amp, and yagis at 50',
100', and 200'. Everything worked flawlessly.
Thanks to everyone for all of the QSOs, and to Ed W0SD and Edith W0OE for their
great hospitality, and for all of their hard work keeping their station in great
shape. Edith is a great cook!
73, Joe W0DB
