Good fun! Off the plane from G on Thursday 9PM; got up to present at a
videoconference with HB9 at 4AM, telcon at 9, drove daughter to school,
etc...oh, and fixed a few of the many wires brought down by recent weather.
Decided a 3 hour nap was more important than more radials or the JA beverage,
and then it was off to the races.
Contrary to habit, I won't list all the stuff that's still wrong with the
station, except to say it was enough to make me skip CQWW -- ouch! LOTS more
repairs to do, let alone all the stuff I have sitting here and yet to put up,
but you have to get on the air, right? Even though more of my antennas are
broken than working, I decided I HAD to do ARRL DX, and boy am I glad I did!
Despite high winds and SIX short power outages (a retro kick logging with
pencil and paper each time as the computer rebooted), this was a blast. Plenty
of great DX moments, including being called by P2, 5N, and 3B8, and finding FO
(among others) on 10 and T30 (among many others) on 15. A few very nice runs
(though I expected more, especially on 40 near the end, which seemed to slow
down).
I heard lots of great operating, which makes me happy to be in this hobby (even
after all the years and all the complaining we hear). For myself, I'm
continuing to improve, getting better and better at the software (N1MM), the
radios (IC 7800 and IC 775DSP), and making the most of broken antennas,
feedlines, rotors, etc. I can now interlace multiple serial exchanges on both
radios without breaking a sweat (well, not much anyway). And I don't think I
lost a single Q by fumbling the SO2R setup. Progress!
Looking at the score now, it appears I set a new 3rd call area LP record (with
any luck--breaking my own of 2004). (I'll hold on to that as the winning score
posts roll in above mine.)
Congrats to all, thanks to N4YDU for taking on the reporting, and see you on
the bands...I'm also scheduled to go on the T32C DXpedition in October, so keep
your ears peeled...
73,
Maury W3EF
